1914–1950
Early script
The brand adopted a flowing script letterform in the early decades of the twentieth century, a style common to hosiery and garment labels of the era. The mark relied entirely on hand-lettered calligraphy with no supplementary symbol or enclosure.
1950–1970
Condensed serif
A condensed serif wordmark replaced the earlier script, giving the brand a more structured and print-ready appearance suited to mid-century packaging. The letterforms were tighter and more upright, reflecting a broader shift toward legibility in consumer goods labeling.
1970–1979
Rounded sans
Hanes moved to a rounded sans-serif wordmark during the early 1970s, a choice aligned with the softer, more approachable typographic trends of that decade. The update brought the brand closer to the casual, comfort-focused positioning it was building through television advertising.

Wide sans
The late-1970s revision widened and regularized the sans-serif letterforms, producing a bolder presence on retail packaging. A print variant in black and white accompanied the color version for use in newspapers and catalogs.

1992–1999
Benchmark mark
A redesign in 1992 introduced a modified version of the Basilea typeface, giving the wordmark more distinctive character. The logotype was set in a customized weight, separating Hanes visually from the generic sans-serif forms it had used through the previous two decades.

Landor wordmark
Designed by Landor Associates
Landor Associates redesigned the Hanes wordmark in 1999, introducing the arched, tightly spaced letterforms that remain in use today. The curved baseline gives the logotype a distinctive upward motion, and the mark has since appeared across apparel, retail packaging, and digital channels with minimal modification.
