1981–2011
Wildcat N
Northwestern athletics adopted a block N with a snarling wildcat head emerging from the letterform's lower gap. The mark served the Wildcats for three decades across uniforms, signage, and licensed merchandise.
2012–2014
Simplified N
A new partnership with Under Armour ahead of the 2012 football season brought a stripped-down athletic mark. The wildcat head was removed, leaving a block N with an angular notch the university described as referencing a claw strike.
2015
Wordmark introduction
A university-wide brand refresh introduced a stacked wordmark in Northwestern Purple, separating the institution's primary visual identifier from its historic seal. The change gave schools and units a unified typographic mark for digital and print use.
