Hurley wordmark

Chad Hurley created PayPal's first wordmark during his job interview in 1999, becoming the company's fifteenth employee and first graphic designer. The logotype set "PayPal" in Verdana with a two-tone color split between "Pay" and "Pal," a visual device that persisted through subsequent revisions.
2007–2014
Refined wordmark
A 2007 refinement tightened the letterforms and adjusted spacing while retaining the Verdana-derived type and the dual-blue color scheme. The changes were subtle enough that most users did not notice a transition had occurred.

Fuseproject, led by Yves Béhar, redesigned the identity in 2014 alongside the company's spin-off from eBay. The new wordmark paired modified Futura Bold Italic with a double-P monogram, shifting from Verdana for the first time and introducing a richer indigo-and-cobalt palette suited to high-density screens.

Gretel refresh

New York studio Gretel overhauled the brand in 2022 in collaboration with PayPal's in-house team, commissioning a new proprietary typeface, PayPal Open, developed with Swiss foundry Optimo. The refresh unified a fragmented global identity across visual, verbal, and sonic channels while preserving the double-P mark from the previous system.

Pentagram rebrand

Pentagram redesigned the identity in September 2024, replacing the long-standing italic dual-blue wordmark with an upright black logotype set in PayPal Pro, a custom adaptation of Lineto's LL Supreme. The palette contracted to five core hues, removing yellow entirely and signaling a deliberate shift toward a more restrained, financial-services aesthetic.
