1969–1975
GPO Telephones
Before privatisation, the telecommunications arm of the General Post Office operated under the GPO Telephones name and identity. The wordmark reflected the service's status as a government department rather than a commercial enterprise.

1975–1981
Post Office Telecommunications
Following a structural split of the Post Office, the telecoms division was separated under its own name and identity. The mark retained the institutional character of its predecessor while signalling a distinct operational unit.

The Piper
Designed by Wolff Olins
On 2 April 1991, the company adopted the trading name BT and launched a new identity by Wolff Olins, featuring a stylised figure known as the Piper. The design drew on modernist painting traditions and was intended to humanise the brand following privatisation in 1984.

In April 2003, BT replaced the Piper with a globe-shaped emblem of six interlocking coloured circles, referred to internally as the Connected World. Also designed by Wolff Olins, the mark reflected the company's expansion into international markets and broadband services.

Roundel
Designed by Paul Franklin, Red&White
London studio Red&White, led by founder Paul Franklin, introduced a stripped-back roundel enclosing the BT letterforms in 2019 after a three-and-a-half-year project. The identity shifted the brand's primary colour from blue to purple and discarded the globe symbol in favour of a single geometric mark.
