1903–1907
First wordmark
The company's earliest mark set the name in a plain, compressed letterform with no ornamentation. At this stage the brand had no oval and no script, just a straightforward typeset name on early vehicles and correspondence.
1907–1927
Wills script
Designed by C. Harold Wills
Chief engineer C. Harold Wills, trained in Spencerian calligraphy, drew the cursive wordmark from his own hand, not from Henry Ford's signature, despite a persistent popular claim. The flowing script became the throughline of every Ford mark that followed.
1927–1957
Script in oval
The Wills script moved inside an oval container with the release of the 1927 Model A, establishing the blue oval structure that the company still uses. By the mid-1930s the oval had become the primary vehicle emblem, replacing the earlier crest that appeared on the 1949 models.

Blue oval refined
A 1957 redesign reshaped the badge from a lozenge into a cleaner, wider oval, the direct geometric ancestor of the 1965 version. The mark was used internally from August 1957 but did not appear in advertising until early 1964.
1965–2003
Unimark corporate identity
Designed by Unimark International
Unimark International, whose partners included Bob Noorda, Ralph Eckerstrom, and Massimo Vignelli, refined the 1957 oval and built a complete corporate identity around it. That flat blue mark proved durable enough to return as the company's primary logo after a gradient interlude from 2003 to 2017.
2003–2017
Centennial gradient
For the company's 100th anniversary in 2003, the oval received a gradient fill and a three-dimensional quality that reflected the design conventions of that era. The chrome border was removed and the blue deepened; Ford retired this version in 2017 in favor of the flat 1965 geometry.
2017–present · current
Flat blue oval
Returning to the proportions Unimark set in 1965, the current mark stripped away the gradient and three-dimensional effects. After more than 50 years, the same basic geometry of script inside a horizontal oval continues as the company's face across vehicles, signage, and digital surfaces.
