2011–2012
ZenPayroll launch
The company launched as ZenPayroll after being accepted into Y Combinator's Winter 2012 batch. Founders Josh Reeves, Tomer London, and Edward Kim chose the name only days before Demo Day, and the early wordmark reflected that bootstrapped origin.

2012–2015
ZenPayroll refined
A more considered wordmark replaced the launch version as the product gained traction and the company raised its first significant rounds. The logotype kept the lowercase, approachable register of the original while tightening the letter spacing and refining the overall weight.

2015–2019
Gusto introduction
In September 2015 the company renamed from ZenPayroll to Gusto, coinciding with the launch of health insurance and workers' compensation benefits. The new name was chosen to reflect the energy small-business owners bring to their work, and the visual identity shifted to a warm coral palette to stand apart from the blue-dominant HR software category.

Gusto rebrand
An in-house team led by creative director Micah Panama, with designers Jenna Carando and Natalie Schoch, overhauled the identity in July 2019. The new wordmark and system prioritized trustworthiness alongside friendliness, reflecting the weight of responsibility the product carries for employees' livelihoods.
