Lamp of Knowledge Seal
At the Regents meeting of October 16, 1895, the University of Michigan adopted a new seal designed around a lamp of knowledge resting on a book, with a rising sun behind a shield drawn from the Michigan state coat of arms. The motto 'Artes, Scientia, Veritas' appears on a ribbon below the shield. This seal replaced the earlier Minerva design and served as the university's primary institutional mark for over a century, used on diplomas, official documents, and formal communications.
2012–2013
Block M Wordmark
Following an eight-month brand study completed in 2011, the University of Michigan introduced the Block M as its official institutional logo, moving it from an athletics context into university-wide academic identity. The maize Block M on a deep blue field was paired with the custom Victors typeface spelling out 'University of Michigan.' This transition formalized the block letter as the primary mark across all schools, departments, and administrative units.

Refined Block M
A 2013 refinement standardized the Block M's proportions and adjusted the maize to a slightly lighter shade, accompanied by strict construction guidelines governing color, spacing, and co-branding across all university units. The update resolved inconsistencies that had emerged during the initial 2012 rollout and completed the university's shift from the seal to the Block M as its defining visual identity.
