1958–1976
BankAmericard
Bank of America launched the BankAmericard in September 1958, the earliest predecessor to the Visa brand. The name and mark identified the card as a proprietary Bank of America product before a broader network of licensee banks was established.
1976–1992
First Visa wordmark
On December 2, 1976, it was announced that BankAmericard licensees worldwide would unify under the new Visa name, with a rollout beginning in March 1977. The wordmark set the letters in blue against white bands, with a gold stripe below and a blue stripe above, a tricolor structure that persisted for decades.
1992–2005
Refined wordmark
A redesign in 1992 refined the letterforms and lightened the color palette, shifting from blue, white, and orange to a cleaner cyan, white, and yellow scheme. The updated version became the template for all subsequent Visa identities through the early 2000s.

Lippincott Mercer refresh
Designed by Lippincott Mercer
Lippincott Mercer redesigned the mark in April 2005, removing the rectangular card-shaped border so the wordmark stood on its own. Research at the time showed consumers identified more strongly with the Visa name than with the framed logo device.
2014–2021
Turner Duckworth blue
Designed by Turner Duckworth
Turner Duckworth redesigned the identity in January 2014, dropping the gold color entirely to leave a single deep blue wordmark. The gold stripe was retained on acceptance marks for cards and advertising, but was absent from the standalone corporate logotype.

Mucho rebrand
Designed by Mucho
Branding studio Mucho overhauled the identity in July 2021, separating the wordmark from the tricolor symbol into two distinct assets and drawing a custom typeface called Visa Dialect. The updated colors were repositioned to emphasize access and inclusion rather than prestige.
