Walter Landor & Associates introduced a streamlined wordmark on March 5, 1969, replacing ornate Victorian lettering with clean, modern typography. The redesign coincided with Bank of America's push to establish a consistent national identity as it expanded beyond California.

Helvetica Black

A 1983 update switched the wordmark to Helvetica Black, a blunt sans-serif that was then the default choice for corporate modernization across American banking. The name was set in all lowercase, a common signal of accessibility that sat awkwardly with the institution's scale.

Flag mark

The 1998 merger of NationsBank and BankAmerica created the largest bank in the United States at the time. Enterprise IG designed the new identity around a stylized flag mark built from red and blue stripes, drawn to reference both the American flag and the bank's national footprint.

Lippincott refined the identity in November 2018, replacing the Franklin Gothic Condensed typeface with a custom wordmark set in Elisar DT Infant and Connections. The flag symbol from 1998 was retained intact; the update tightened the overall system for digital and mobile contexts.
