History
1998–1999
Merger mark
When Citicorp and Travelers Group merged in October 1998 to form Citigroup, the combined entity adopted a transitional wordmark pairing the Citicorp blue with the Travelers red umbrella. The composite identity served as a holding mark while a permanent brand was developed.
1999–2007
Citi arc
Designed by Paula Scher, Pentagram
Paula Scher of Pentagram sketched the core concept at the first client meeting in 1998, placing a red arc above the letter 't' in 'citi' to echo the Travelers umbrella. The full rollout came in August 1999, with the wordmark set in Interstate and the arc carrying the red of the acquired insurer into a simplified, consumer-facing identity.
