1906–1933
Heraldic crest with merlettes
Derived from the coat of arms of Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of Detroit, the quartered shield displays merlettes, stylized birds without beaks or feet drawn from the family's French heraldry, alongside a chevron and blackbirds. An ornate ring-and-wreath surround frames the whole device, embedding the mark in the tradition of European coachbuilders.

1933–1964
Streamlined crest
Through the 1930s and 1940s the crest was reworked into a bolder, more geometric shape suited to the chrome dashboards of the era. The quartered motif survived but the merlettes were drawn larger and more stylized, and the palette shifted toward high-contrast enameled colors that could be reproduced on hood ornaments and stamped trim.

Classic crest and wreath
By 1965 the crest had settled into its most recognizable mid-century form: the quartered shield set inside a sculpted wreath on a crowned surround, printed in deep red, gold, and black. Variations through 1971 and 1985 refined proportions and adjusted the crown, but the heraldic structure and the merlettes remained constants for three decades.
1999–2014
Merlettes removed
Designed by Landor Associates
Landor Associates stripped the six merlettes from the yellow and black quadrants, clearing the crest for the first time in the company's history. The wreath was reworked into a more polished, gradient-heavy form appropriate for the digital era, and the overall silhouette grew more upright and angular to signal a sharper product direction.
2014–2021
Wider shield, wreath dropped
Designed by Nathan Korkus
Nathan Korkus widened the proportions of the quartered shield and dropped the encircling wreath entirely, leaving a clean crest standing alone for the first time. The merlette-free quarterings from 1999 were retained, and a flat variant was introduced alongside the shaded version as screens replaced print as the primary canvas.

Monochrome crest
Designed by Mother Design
Mother Design reduced the crest to a single flat color, erasing the enamel palette that had defined it for over a century. Launched alongside the all-electric Lyriq in October 2021, the mark pairs with Cadillac Gothic, a custom typeface cut by Colophon Foundry, marking a complete departure from the heraldic color tradition while keeping the quartered shield form.
