Thefacebook
Designed by Andrew McCollum
Co-founder Andrew McCollum created the original wordmark for the site then called Thefacebook, bracketing "The" to signal its university-network origins. Zuckerberg later noted he chose blue as the dominant color because he is red-green color blind and blue appears most clearly to him.

Klavika wordmark
Designed by Mike Buzzard / Cuban Council
After dropping "the" from its name in August 2005, Facebook hired Cuban Council's Mike Buzzard to create a professional identity, with type designer Joe Kral completing the modified Klavika Bold letterforms. The lowercase wordmark on a blue field became the face of the platform through its first decade of mass growth.

Custom type refresh
Designed by Eric Olson / In-house
Facebook worked with Eric Olson, the original designer of Klavika, to produce a custom typeface that retired the double-story "a" for a simpler, more open form. The shift was subtle enough that many users did not notice the change, but it reflected a broader push toward a friendlier, less rigid visual tone.

Blue wordmark
The 2019 update removed the white-on-blue background, rendering the wordmark in solid blue on a transparent ground and shifting to a brighter hue. Introduced first on mobile apps in September 2019, the mark rolled out to the main website in June 2020.

Facebook Sans
A brand refresh in September 2023 introduced a redrawn wordmark set in Facebook Sans, a deeper shade of blue for improved contrast, and a flattened app icon. The update aimed to make the "f" mark more legible at small sizes while bringing the desktop and mobile identities into closer alignment.
