2011
Picaboo
Launched on July 8, 2011 under the name Picaboo, the original mark showed a grinning ghost holding a photograph against a glossy yellow badge. The style reflected the skeuomorphic design conventions popular in early iOS apps of the period.
2011–2013
Snapchat rename
When the app relaunched as Snapchat in September 2011, the ghost character carried over from Picaboo with minimal changes. The rename established the ghost as the brand's primary visual asset rather than the product name.
2013–2015
Gradient ghost
A September 2013 update stripped the ghost's facial features and replaced the flat glossy badge with a yellow-to-orange gradient background. Removing the shadow behind the ghost simplified the silhouette and moved the mark away from three-dimensional styling.
2015–2019
Flat yellow
Between October and November 2015, the gradient background was replaced with a solid, unmodulated yellow. This shift to a flat single color aligned the mark with the broader industry move toward minimal, two-dimensional app icons.
2019–present · current
Thicker outline
On August 8, 2019, the ghost's outline weight was substantially increased, which also altered the contour of the silhouette slightly. The heavier stroke improved legibility at small sizes on modern high-density screens.
