1924–1947
Globe
When the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company renamed itself International Business Machines in 1924, it wrapped the full name around a striped globe to signal worldwide reach. The ornate seal looked the part but left little that held up at small sizes.
1947–1956
First letters
In 1947 the globe gave way to the three letters on their own, set in a solid slab serif. It was the first time IBM trusted its initials to carry the company.
1956–1972
Rand slab serif
Designed by Paul Rand
Paul Rand redrew the letters in the heavy City Medium slab serif, squaring them into a stable block. The wordmark gave IBM a deliberate, modern face as it moved into mainframes.
