1996–1997
BackRub
Before the Google name existed, the search project ran at Stanford under the name BackRub. The wordmark used a simple serif treatment on a plain background, reflecting its origins as an academic research tool rather than a commercial product.

1999–2010
Catull era
Designed by Ruth Kedar
Designer Ruth Kedar introduced the Catull typeface wordmark in May 1999, replacing earlier improvised versions made in GIMP. The serif letterforms, multicolor palette, and shadow treatment remained the defining public face of the company for eleven years, spanning Google's growth from startup to global infrastructure.

The change was previewed on the homepage months before the official launch and was largely imperceptible to casual observers.
2013–2015
Flat transition
In September 2013 the shadow was dropped entirely, producing a clean flat wordmark that aligned the logo with Google's emerging Material Design principles. The typeface remained Catull, making this a transitional step rather than a full redesign.
2015–2026
Product Sans
On September 1, 2015, Google's in-house design team replaced the Catull serif with a custom geometric sans-serif called Product Sans, shifting to a form that worked equally well at display scale and as a small app icon. The four-color scheme carried over, but the rounded, stroke-consistent letterforms signaled a broader platform identity rather than a single website.
2026–present · current
Google Sans refresh
Announced at Google I/O in May 2026 and rolled out alongside redesigned Workspace suite icons, the wordmark shifted from Product Sans to a modified version of Google Sans, with slightly altered letterforms and updated color weights. The change was first seen in Googlebook before appearing across all surfaces.
