1917–1922
Leland founding mark
Henry Leland founded Lincoln Motor Company in 1917, naming it after the president he had voted for as a young man. The earliest wordmark appeared without the star emblem that would later define the brand.

1922–1964
Ford acquisition mark
Ford purchased Lincoln in 1922 for $8 million after Leland's company ran into financial difficulty, folding it into its luxury division. The wordmark of this period carried a straightforward typographic treatment without the star device.

1964–1972
Continental monogram
The 1960s mark introduced a paired-L monogram, reflecting the prestige of the Continental nameplate that had become Lincoln's flagship model in 1961. The treatment was cleaner and more geometric than its predecessors.

Continental star
A four-pointed star enclosed in a square became Lincoln's primary mark in 1972, derived from the compass-rose motif used on the Continental nameplate. The symbol ran unchanged for four decades across the full model lineup.

Refined star
Ford redesigned the Lincoln star in 2012 as part of a broader effort to reposition the brand against European luxury competitors. The star's proportions were refined and the enclosing frame was thinned, giving the mark a lighter, more contemporary presence.
