Blue Ribbon Sports
Founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, the company began as a distributor of Onitsuka Tiger shoes before manufacturing its own footwear. The early wordmark reflected a regional retailer operating out of Beaverton, Oregon, with no connection yet to the brand identity Nike would develop.

Script Nike
Designed by Carolyn Davidson
When the company renamed itself Nike in May 1971, graphic design student Carolyn Davidson created the Swoosh mark for $35, and the name appeared in a flowing italic script. Davidson trademarked the Swoosh on June 18, 1971; the custom letterforms set the brand apart from the technical, sans-serif typography common in athletic goods at the time.

In 1978 the italic script was replaced with the word NIKE set in Futura Extra Bold Condensed, a geometric sans-serif that reads clearly at small sizes on athletic footwear and packaging. The Swoosh and wordmark appeared together as a lockup throughout this period, with the combination becoming the standard identifier across apparel and footwear globally.

Swoosh only
Beginning in 1995, Nike adopted the standalone Swoosh as its primary corporate mark, dropping the accompanying wordmark from the main logo. The shift reflected a level of global recognition that made the wordmark redundant; the Futura NIKE logotype continues as a secondary identifier on products and communications.
