1853–1917
Founding wordmark
American Express was founded in 1853 as a freight and express delivery company, and its earliest mark rendered the name in plain serif lettering without a containing shape. The company had not yet developed the financial services identity it would become known for.

1917–1963
Early travel era
By 1917, American Express had pivoted toward travel and financial services, and the updated mark reflected that shift with a more formal typographic treatment. The design served the company through both world wars and the postwar travel boom.

1963–1974
Green box era
In 1963, the company adopted a boxed logotype that placed the name in a contained rectangular frame, a format that would define its visual system for decades. The green colorway distinguished it from competitors and aligned with the launch of the first American Express card products.

Blue box
Designed by Lippincott & Margulies
Lippincott and Margulies redesigned the mark on December 11, 1974, replacing the green box with a blue square and setting the name in a modified version of Handel Gothic. The flat, high-contrast treatment proved durable enough to anchor the brand for more than four decades with only minor adjustments.
2000–2018
Gradient blue box
In 2000, a radial gradient was applied to the blue field and the color was shifted to a slightly cooler shade. The gradient update followed widespread adoption of screen-based media but retained the Handel Gothic letterforms established in 1974.

Pentagram refresh
Designed by Pentagram (Abbott Miller)
On April 9, 2018, Pentagram partner Abbott Miller led a redraw of the 1974 logotype, removing the gradient and intensifying the blue to a richer tone. The letterforms were refined for digital legibility at small sizes, with subtle changes to the spacing between certain characters.
