Sound of Music
Sound of Music, founded in Minneapolis in 1966, operated as a consumer audio chain before expanding into home appliances and video products. The early wordmark used a script lettering style consistent with late-1960s retail branding.
1984–1986
Best Buy debut
In April 1984, the chain rebranded from Sound of Music to Best Buy Co., marking a strategic shift toward a broader consumer electronics and appliance retail model. The new name came with a simplified wordmark set against the yellow and black color palette that would define the brand for decades.
1986–1989
Superstore era
The 1986 refresh coincided with the rollout of the high-volume superstore format, which eliminated commissioned sales staff in favor of a self-service floor layout. Futura Extra Bold set the wordmark, paired with the yellow price-tag shape that referenced the no-haggle pricing concept.

Price tag logo
Introduced in August 1989, this version integrated the wordmark directly into a price tag device, reinforcing the discount-retail positioning that drove Best Buy's rapid national expansion through the 1990s. The mark remained in use for nearly three decades, surviving the company's entry into Canada and a short-lived UK expansion.

Separated tag
On May 9, 2018, Best Buy separated the wordmark from the price-tag device, setting the text in TT Norms Pro Black and repositioning the tag as a smaller element at the lower right. The update reflected a shift in brand focus from price-led messaging toward service and expertise.
