Brownie the Elf
The original Cleveland Browns identity featured Brownie the Elf, a cartoon mascot drawn in the style of mid-century sports illustration. The elf appeared on team materials during the franchise's early years in the AAFC and NFL, before the team moved toward a helmet-based identity.

1959–1970
Brownie Revised
A revised version of Brownie the Elf introduced a rounder, more simplified rendering of the mascot. Use of the elf figure was gradually phased out as the franchise shifted to the plain helmet as its primary identifying mark.

1970–1986
Plain Orange Helmet
By 1970, Cleveland became the only NFL franchise with no logo on its helmet, using a plain orange shell instead. This absence of decoration became the team's defining visual, a deliberate choice that persisted through the original franchise's final season.

2015 Rebrand
A 2015 identity refresh standardized the helmet graphic with updated proportions and a refined color palette. The change accompanied adjustments to uniform striping and wordmark treatment across the team's full visual system.

White Facemask
A 2024 update changed the facemask color in the helmet mark from gray to white, matching a concurrent change to the physical helmets worn on the field. The overall orange shell and logoless tradition remained unchanged.
