History
1832–1961
Bank of Nova Scotia
Founded in Halifax in 1832, the Bank of Nova Scotia operated under its full formal name for over a century. Early marks were typographic, carrying the complete name in period-appropriate letterforms without a pictorial device.
1961–1963
Allan Fleming wordmark
Designed by Allan Fleming at Cooper & Beatty
Allan Fleming at Cooper & Beatty shortened the institution's name to Scotiabank and paired two contrasting typefaces: a chancery-style script for "Scotia" and a rounded sans-serif for "BANK." The dual-font wordmark marked the bank's first major shift toward a modern corporate identity.
1963–1974
Globe introduced
A globe motif was added to the 1961 wordmark in 1963, signalling the bank's growing international operations. The globe would remain embedded in every subsequent version of the mark for decades.
1974–1998
Scotia red
A revised version in 1974 formalized the distinctive red now known as Scotia red, giving the bank a proprietary color alongside the globe-and-S device. The name Scotiabank became the official operating name worldwide during this era.
1998–2019
Siegel+Gale refresh
Designed by Joe Finocchiaro at Siegel+Gale
Joe Finocchiaro at Siegel+Gale redesigned the mark in 1998, resetting the wordmark in a modified Frutiger and shifting the brand color to a cooler rose red. The globe device was refined but retained its central role in the identity.
2019–present · current
OneMethod rebrand
Designed by OneMethod with Dalton Maag
OneMethod overhauled the identity in May 2019, inverting the color logic from a red bank with colorful type to a colorful system anchored in red. A custom typeface called Scotia Headline was developed with Dalton Maag, and the wordmark and the S icon were redrawn for digital and small-scale use.
