2007
Flower wordmark
Tumblr launched in 2007 with a wordmark set in Bookman Old Style accompanied by a small flower device borrowed from Davidville, founder David Karp's earlier web development company. The flower gave the mark a handcrafted character that set it apart from the cleaner tech logos of the period.
2007–2013
Plain wordmark
Within months of launch, the flower was dropped and the Bookman Old Style wordmark stood alone, often rendered against a blue background. This cleaner version carried the brand through its fastest growth years, including a period of rapid user acquisition and rising cultural prominence.
2013–2018
Flat redesign
A 2013 redesign coinciding with Yahoo's $1.1 billion acquisition replaced the older serif with a flatter treatment using a modified Bookman Old Style alongside Gibson as the brand typeface. The update aligned Tumblr's visual identity with the flat design trend then sweeping major consumer platforms.
