1974–1982
Bank of New South Wales
Designed by Pieter Huveneers
Dutch-born Australian designer Pieter Huveneers created the red stylised W mark for the Bank of New South Wales in 1974, replacing the institution's coat of arms. The geometric letterform was designed to work across print and signage at a time when Australian banks were modernising their public identities.
1982–2003
Westpac Banking Corporation
The 1982 merger of the Bank of New South Wales and the Commercial Bank of Australia produced Westpac Banking Corporation, a name derived from Western Pacific. The existing W mark was retained and paired with the new name, carrying the visual identity through the transition without redesigning the symbol.

A 2003 refresh introduced a tighter typographic lockup alongside the W mark and dropped 'Banking Corporation' from the display name. The red W, now over three decades old, remained unchanged, reinforcing continuity while the supporting wordmark was modernised.
