1932
Boston Braves
The franchise began as the Boston Braves in 1932, sharing a name and stadium with the baseball club at Braves Field. The team adopted the Braves identity wholesale for its inaugural season before moving to Fenway Park and changing course the following year.

1933–1936
Boston Redskins
Renamed the Redskins in 1933 after the move to Fenway Park, the club adopted a new mark for its time in Boston. The team played under this identity for four seasons before owner George Preston Marshall relocated the franchise to Washington ahead of the 1937 season.

Blackfeet Nation tribal leader Walter Wetzel designed the profile portrait that debuted in 1972, drawing on his own likeness for reference. The mark replaced a series of earlier helmet decals and became the template for every subsequent Redskins logo through 2020.
1983–2020
Redskins (revised)
After a one-season experiment in 1982 where feathers were tucked under the helmet circle to improve decal adhesion, the team reverted to a refined version of the Wetzel portrait. This iteration ran for 37 years, the longest-lived mark in the franchise's history, before pressure from sponsors and the public prompted its retirement in July 2020.

2020–2021
Washington Football Team
On July 13, 2020, the franchise retired the Redskins name and operated as the Washington Football Team for two seasons while searching for a permanent identity. The interim mark used a simple wordmark rather than a figurative logo, a deliberate placeholder while the organization conducted a full rebrand.
2022–present · current
Commanders
The Washington Commanders name was announced on February 2, 2022, with a new logo featuring a stylized 'W' in burgundy and gold. The identity ended a two-year interim period and gave the franchise its first purpose-built, original mark since the 1930s.
