1930–1934
Founding wordmark
The Detroit Lions entered the NFL in 1930 as the Portsmouth Spartans, relocating to Detroit in 1934 and adopting a new identity. This early mark used a simple typographic treatment with a spark motif reflecting the city's industrial character.

1934–1961
Early lion mark
After the franchise moved to Detroit, the team introduced a lion figure as its primary mark. The design was relatively flat and stylized, consistent with sports graphics of the era.

1961–1969
Running lion silhouette
A running lion silhouette replaced the earlier upright figure and first appeared on helmets in the 1961 season. The mark stripped away interior detail in favor of a clean, side-profile outline that read well at small sizes on headgear.

1970–2002
Primary lion era
The running lion became the team's primary logo in 1970, having proven itself as the helmet mark for nearly a decade. Honolulu Blue served as the defining color alongside a thin outline, and this version remained in use for over thirty years.

2009–2017
Detailed lion
Following a 0-16 season in 2008, the Lions updated the lion mark with added facial detail, visible eyes, and more defined musculature. Black was retained as an accent, and the overall silhouette took on a more aggressive stance than earlier versions.

Silver-outline lion
On February 1, 2017, the team announced a revised mark that replaced the black outline with silver, coinciding with the removal of black from the team's official color palette. The lion figure itself was unchanged; the shift was purely a palette decision.
