1858–1932
Early wordmark
Founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy, the store used a simple hand-lettered wordmark in its early decades. The red star, drawn from a tattoo Macy had on his hand, appeared as a symbol on packaging and storefronts but had not yet been formalized into the logotype.
1948–1986
Script wordmark
A flowing script wordmark adopted in 1948 served as the primary mark for nearly four decades. The letterforms conveyed a department-store formality that was common in mid-century American retail branding.
1970–1977
Modernist sans
A brief modernist phase in the early 1970s replaced the script with a clean, geometric sans-serif wordmark, reflecting broader retail moves toward corporate minimalism. The treatment echoed contemporaneous identity work at department stores across the United States.

Avant Garde wordmark
Set in a modified version of ITC Avant Garde Gothic, the 1982 wordmark introduced the tight, rounded letterforms that would define the brand's visual identity for over two decades. The red star continued to appear separately in retail contexts but was not yet locked into the wordmark.
2004–2019
Star integrated
In 2004, the red star was permanently incorporated into the logotype, appearing between a lowercase 'r' and apostrophe in 'Macy's.' The move formalized what had long been an informal symbol of the brand, drawing on more than a century of association with the founder's personal mark.

Refreshed wordmark
A refresh in August 2019 transitioned the wordmark to a modified version of Evolventa, producing slightly heavier strokes and a more confident weight while retaining the integrated red star. The overall structure remained familiar, with the changes most visible in the letterfit and stroke contrast.
