1884–1902
Founder wordmark
The Rover Cycle Company, founded in Coventry by John Kemp Starley, adopted a text-based mark in its earliest years. Starley's 1885 Rover Safety Bicycle had already established the brand name before the company turned to automobiles.

1929–1947
Viking ship badge
Rover adopted a Viking longship as its central emblem during this period, reflecting a broader Edwardian-era trend of using heraldic and nautical motifs to signal quality and heritage. The ship imagery remained a recurring element in Rover badges for decades afterward.

1965–1976
Mid-century badge
A cleaner, more geometric version of the Viking ship badge appeared as British Leyland consolidated its marques. The simplified treatment reduced ornamental detail to suit reproduction on a wider range of vehicle sizes and marketing materials.

1979–1989
Oval badge
Under British Leyland and later the Austin Rover Group, the brand moved to an oval framing around the Viking ship, giving the badge a more unified, medallion-like appearance. This version appeared on the SD1 and early 200 and 800 series cars.
1989–2003
Ellipse badge
A redesigned elliptical badge with a refined Viking ship silhouette debuted alongside the Rover 200 and 400 facelifts. The mark carried through the BMW ownership years and became the most widely recognized form of the Rover emblem internationally.

Final mark
A revised version of the ellipse badge was introduced under MG Rover Group before the company entered administration in 2005. Jaguar Land Rover subsequently acquired the Rover trademark, and the brand has remained dormant since.
