Unimark AA
Designed by Massimo Vignelli and Heinz Waibl (Unimark International); Henry Dreyfuss (eagle)
Massimo Vignelli and Heinz Waibl of Unimark International set the dual-A letterforms in Helvetica, split red and blue to echo the national colors. The airline insisted on retaining an eagle, which Vignelli declined to draw; Henry Dreyfuss's office produced the geometric, X-shaped bird that was appended to the logotype.
1977–2013
Simplified eagle
A minor but lasting revision removed the eagle's eye, producing a cleaner geometric silhouette. The joined wordmark began appearing more consistently alongside the symbol during this period, cementing the pairing that would define American Airlines for three more decades.

Flight Symbol
Designed by FutureBrand
FutureBrand introduced a new mark called the Flight Symbol, combining a stylized eagle head, a star, and an implied A within intersecting red and blue forms. The rebrand accompanied the merger with US Airways, which made American the largest airline in the world by fleet size at the time.
