1909–1930
Founding Shield
When the Anglo-Persian Oil Company registered its BP brand in 1909, the shield mark established green and yellow as the company's defining colors. The crest-like form drew on heraldic convention, positioning BP as a British institution in the early petroleum industry.
1930–1958
Interwar Shield
A restated shield from the early 1930s consolidated the BP identity as the company expanded into new markets. The bolder letterforms and more saturated green reflected a shift toward a confident, standardized corporate presence across filling stations.
1958–1989
Loewy Refinement
Designed by Raymond Loewy
In 1958, BP commissioned Raymond Loewy's Paris studio, Compagnie de l'Esthetique Industrielle, to audit the existing mark. Rather than replace it, the team refined the shield: the border was removed, the green shifted toward blue-green, and the lettering was rendered in a crisper yellow, modernizing without discarding the established equity.

Green Shield
Designed by Siegel & Gale and Addison Design Consultants
Unveiled in late 1988 and officially adopted on 1 February 1989, this redesign by Siegel & Gale and Addison Design Consultants shifted emphasis decisively toward green. The letters were italicized and a gold outline was added, projecting a more dynamic image while retaining the shield form that had defined BP since 1930.

Helios
Designed by Landor Associates
Introduced on 24 July 2000 and designed by Landor Associates, the Helios mark replaced the shield entirely with a radiant geometric sunburst in green and yellow. The rebrand coincided with BP's acquisition of Amoco and Arco and a stated repositioning from oil company to broader energy company.
