1925–1931
Wavy script
When the Caterpillar Tractor Company formed from the 1925 merger of Holt Manufacturing and C. L. Best Tractor, it adopted a red wavy script wordmark. Machines of the period were painted battleship gray, and the cursive mark was applied across early product lines.
1932–1939
Block sans-serif
A shift to upright block lettering coincided with a broader product refresh that introduced the company's signature Hi-Way Yellow paint. The more geometric wordmark established a bolder, more legible presence across heavy equipment and printed materials.
1941–1957
Wartime sans-serif
During the World War II and postwar expansion period, the mark settled into a sturdy condensed sans-serif form. Production during the war years extended to military equipment, and the straightforward typography suited the functional character of that output.

Postwar wordmark
A revised wordmark in the late 1950s reflected the postwar economic expansion and Caterpillar's growing international footprint. The letterforms were refined toward a cleaner extra-bold treatment, setting the stage for the complete redesign that followed a decade later.
1967–1988
Lester Beall identity
Designed by Lester Beall
American modernist Lester Beall redesigned the mark in August 1967, setting the abbreviated CAT in Microgramma, a geometric sans-serif typeface. Beall, known for bringing European avant-garde principles into US corporate identity, introduced the mark alongside comprehensive usage guidelines. His work for Caterpillar is documented in the Lester Beall Papers at the Smithsonian Institution.

Landor mark
Designed by Landor Associates
Landor Associates updated the identity in July 1988, refining the bold CAT letterforms and introducing the forward-leaning yellow triangle beneath the logotype. The triangular device reinforced the brand's association with motion and heavy industry, and the mark has remained in continuous use since.
