1891–1910
Founding wordmark
Philips was founded in Eindhoven in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik. Early marks used a plain letterform wordmark with no emblem, reflecting a company focused entirely on incandescent lamp manufacture.
1931–1938
Waves and stars
Three wavy lines and star spangles appeared first on stationery and advertising materials, representing radio waves travelling through air. The motif marked Philips entering the radio broadcasting business and introduced the visual vocabulary that would define the brand for decades.
1938–1968
Kalff shield
Designed by Louis Kalff
Dutch architect and Philips art director Louis Kalff designed the shield enclosing the waves and stars, reportedly describing the motif as a fortunate coincidence since he did not know how radio propagation worked. The combined shield became the core of Philips corporate identity through World War II and into the postwar expansion.

AID modernization
Allied International Designers refined the shield for a more geometric, print-friendly form suitable for the company's growing global product range. This version remained largely unchanged for four decades, spanning the company's evolution from lamps and radios to consumer electronics and medical systems.
2008–2013
Transitional shield
A refined version of the shield, introduced in March 2008, simplified the wordmark letterforms and adjusted proportions without altering the wave-and-star emblem. It served as a transitional mark while the company began repositioning away from consumer electronics toward healthcare and lighting.
2013–present · current
Two-wave shield
On 13 November 2013, Philips unveiled a redesigned shield with two waves instead of three, developed with Interbrand as the company dropped "Electronics" from its name to become Royal Philips N.V. The reduction in waves was positioned to reflect a shift toward health technology and personal care rather than broad consumer electronics.
