1900–1904
Mussel
Shell's first emblem was a literal black-and-white mussel, a nod to the seashell trade the founder's family started in. The drawing carried more detail than a fuel pump would ever need.

1930–1948
Scallop
By 1930 the mussel had become the upright scallop, or pecten, drawn with a steadier and more symmetrical hand. Shell began applying it consistently across signs, cans, and trucks.
1948–1961
Red and yellow
Color arrived in 1948. The red and yellow are often tied to Shell's early foothold in California and the state's Spanish heritage, and they made the pecten read from a passing car.

Loewy rectangle
Designed by Raymond Loewy
Raymond Loewy took on the mark in the early 1960s, setting the yellow shell on a red rectangle so it held up on crowded forecourts. It was a tune-up before the bigger redraw to come.

Pecten
Designed by Raymond Loewy
After a five-studio competition, Loewy's flattened, heavily outlined pecten won and rolled out in 1971, with the word Shell moved below the symbol. It has barely changed in five decades.
