1954–1963
Serif wordmark
Compagnie Française des Pétroles operated under the Total trade name from the early 1950s, with this serif wordmark appearing on signage and fuel products. The mark anchored the brand's retail presence across France and its overseas territories.

1963–1970
Oval emblem
A redesign introduced a more structured oval emblem, reflecting the graphic conventions common among European petroleum companies in the 1960s. The oval format helped the mark stand out on forecourt signage and fuel tankers.

1970–1980
Red and white mark
A bolder, high-contrast treatment adopted a red and white color scheme that became associated with Total's service station network through the 1970s. The simplified geometry suited the era's shift toward clean, reproducible corporate marks.

Classic oval
This oval version served through two major mergers, with the wordmark briefly extending to TotalFina after the 1999 acquisition of Petrofina, then to TotalFinaElf following the merger with Elf Aquitaine in 2000. The mark held through the consolidation period while internal branding was being resolved.
2003–2021
Total sunburst
Designed by Laurent Vincenti for A & Co
Following the merger-era name changes, the group reverted to the Total name in 2003 and introduced a new identity designed by Laurent Vincenti at agency A & Co. The circular sunburst symbol replaced the oval, using a multicolor gradient that the company associated with energy diversity.

TotalEnergies
On 28 May 2021, shareholders approved renaming the group TotalEnergies, a change announced by CEO Patrick Pouyanné earlier that year as part of a stated transition toward renewable energy. The updated wordmark retains the sunburst symbol while appending the new name in full.
