History
1959–1969
King mascot
Introduced in June 1959, this mark placed the crown-wearing King character above a wordmark paired with the new slogan 'Home of the Whopper.' The illustrated mascot gave the brand a distinct personality during a period when fast food chains were racing to establish visual identities.
1969–1994
Bun halves
The 1969 redesign introduced the 'bun halves' structure that would define every Burger King logo for the next five decades: the brand name sandwiched in red lettering between two ochre semicircles representing a burger bun. First used in commerce on January 3, 1969, this was the template from which all subsequent marks evolved.
1994–1999
Refined bun
Released May 1, 1994, this version refined the letterforms of the 1969 mark for greater uniformity and legibility across signage. The overall bun-halves structure was retained; the changes were subtle enough that many locations ran both versions in parallel before fully transitioning.
1999–2020
Swoosh era
Designed by Sterling Brands
Sterling Brands redesigned the mark for July 1, 1999, adding a blue crescent arc and tilting the bun-halves badge for a sense of motion. The diagonal orientation and sweeping blue element were typical of late-1990s corporate identity trends and remained in use at most locations for over two decades.

Retro flat
Designed by Jones Knowles Ritchie
Jones Knowles Ritchie led an 18-month overhaul revealed December 21, 2020, with digital rollout in January 2021. The blue swoosh and diagonal tilt were removed in favor of a flat, centered bun-badge referencing the 1969 design, paired with a custom wordmark developed by typographer Miles Newlyn.
