1972–1976
Founding wordmark
Al Copeland opened the first Popeyes Mighty Good Chicken in Arabi, Louisiana, in 1972, and this early wordmark accompanied the chain's original name. The lettering was informal and hand-rendered in character, suited to a single-location Southern fried chicken stand.

1976–1983
Sailor Man era
A 1976 rebrand renamed the chain Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken and brought in a caricature of Popeye the Sailor Man as a visual anchor, first appearing in a television commercial. The character reference positioned the brand within a crowded fast-food market by attaching it to a recognizable pop-culture figure.
1993–2002
Condensed type update
A December 1993 refresh modernized the logotype with Helvetica Condensed and a custom complementary treatment, dropping the illustrated sailor figure in favor of bold typography. The cleaner letterforms were better suited to the expanding franchise footprint and signage standards of the early 1990s.

2002–2008
Louisiana Kitchen
The chain formally adopted the name Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in 2002, and the updated mark reflected that repositioning by adding a Louisiana flavor cue to the identity. Orange became the signature color, carrying connotations of spice and Southern warmth across packaging and signage.
2008–2020
Pentagram redesign
Designed by Pentagram
Pentagram designed a new identity in 2008 that retained the orange and red color system while refining the badge shape and introducing a rooster device as a brand mark. The redesign gave Popeyes a more structured visual system as the chain pursued international expansion.
2019–present · current
JKR rebrand
Designed by Ian Brignell for Jones Knowles Ritchie
Jones Knowles Ritchie, with lettering by Ian Brignell, unveiled the new identity in testing in December 2019 and announced it publicly on May 29, 2020. The redesign stripped back the badge in favor of a custom script wordmark drawing on Louisiana sign-painting traditions, timed to coincide with the chain's viral chicken sandwich moment.
