1984–1988
Founding mark
The original mark debuted when John Schnatter opened his first pizza shop in Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1984, operating out of a converted broom closet in his father's tavern. It used a basic wordmark with minimal visual identity, reflecting the scrappy early franchise model.

1988–1994
Early franchise logo
As the chain expanded beyond its Indiana roots and began franchising nationally, the logo adopted a more structured wordmark with a red color scheme. The script lettering and apostrophe positioning emphasized the founder's personal brand, a strategy that would persist for three more decades.

This design remained in use across thousands of franchise locations globally for 25 years.
2019–2021
Italian Plate update
Without a formal press announcement, Papa John's quietly updated its wordmark to the Italian Plate typeface on advertising and digital platforms, enlarging the pizza ribbon slightly. The stealth rollout reflected broader uncertainty around the brand following the 2018 departure of its founder amid controversy.

Better by Design
Designed by Su Mathews Hale Design and forpeople
On November 16, 2021, a full rebrand by Su Mathews Hale Design (logo) and forpeople (broader identity system) removed the apostrophe, the pizza ribbon, and the green outline, reducing the name to "Papa Johns" in a bolder, cleaner custom letterform. The apostrophe drop was a deliberate signal of distance from the founder whose name the brand still bears.
