1933–1934
Kwanon pictorial
Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory adopted this pictorial mark when the company was founded in 1933. The design depicts Kwan'on, the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion, and gave the prototype camera its original name before the Canon brand was introduced.
1935–1953
Canon with eagle
The Canon name debuted in 1935, chosen partly for its phonetic resemblance to Kwan'on and for its meaning as a standard of precision. An eagle device served as the corporate emblem when the company was formally incorporated in 1937 as Precision Optical Instruments, Co., Ltd.
1954
1954 wordmark variant
A transitional wordmark form appeared in 1954 as the company began standardizing its corporate identity. This version co-existed briefly with the eagle emblem before the clean serif logotype settled into long-term use.
1955–present · current
Canon wordmark
The refined serif wordmark that emerged from the mid-1950s has remained Canon's primary logotype for over seventy years. A thinly outlined version appeared on camera bodies through the mid-1980s, and the eagle continued as a corporate device until 2004, when a circle replaced it for the company's seventieth anniversary.
