1. 

   1973–1977

   Consumer Value Stores

   The earliest CVS Pharmacy locations carried a plain block wordmark derived from the Consumer Value Stores name, which the chain had used since opening in 1963. Red lettering on a white field identified the brand with minimal visual distinction from other discount retailers of the era.

2. 

   1977–1996

   Selame redesign

   Designed by Selame Design

   Joseph Selame and Selame Design created a new CVS identity set in Helvetica, consolidating the brand around the three-letter abbreviation and helping complete the transition away from the Consumer Value Stores name. The clean sans-serif letterforms reflected a broader retail trend toward compact, legible wordmarks suitable for signage at scale.
