1947–1949
Founding wordmark
The original DeWalt logotype used during the company's independent years as a radial arm saw manufacturer. Script lettering distinguished the brand before its first acquisition.

1949–1960
AMF era
American Machine and Foundry acquired DeWalt in 1949, and the wordmark was updated to include an AMF endorsement ring. The redesign signaled DeWalt's shift from an independent maker to a subsidiary brand.

1960–1969
Black and Decker acquisition
Black and Decker purchased DeWalt from AMF in 1960 and introduced a geometric sans-serif wordmark. The clean, modern letterforms reflected mid-century industrial design conventions common in power tool branding of the period.

Stacked badge
A condensed stacked badge replaced the earlier wordmark during this period. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Black and Decker phased out the DeWalt name on most professional tools, using these marks inconsistently across the remaining product line.

Yellow and black identity
Black and Decker relaunched DeWalt in 1992 as its dedicated professional-grade line, adopting the yellow and black color scheme that became the brand's defining visual mark. Market research had shown the DeWalt name retained stronger credibility with tradespeople than the Black and Decker consumer label.
