1955–1972

First Dollar General

The first Dollar General store opened on June 1, 1955, in Springfield, Kentucky, converting an existing Turner's Department Store location. Cal Turner Sr. built the concept around a single one-dollar price point, a model borrowed from department store "Dollar Days" promotions and applied permanently.

1972–1995

Custom wordmark

A new wordmark introduced in March 1972 dropped the earlier rectangular frame and set "Dollar General" in a custom sans-serif typeface with distinctive letterform details on the D. The simpler, more open composition reflected the chain's growth from a regional retailer into a nationally traded public company.

1995–2008

Outlined badge

The January 1995 update enclosed the wordmark in a rectangular outlined badge and introduced a bolder typographic treatment. Some locations retained this version well past the 2008 cutover, and it remained visible on hundreds of store fascias into the 2010s.

Interbrand refresh

Designed by Interbrand Design Forum

Interbrand Design Forum delivered a new identity in December 2008, replacing the three-color scheme with a high-contrast yellow and black palette and introducing a stretched oval carrier shape. The typeface moved to a modified version of FS Lola Extra-Bold, and the tagline "Save time. Save money. Every day!" was added to the system.
