1991–2000
Software Etc. era
GameStop opened its first location at Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota in September 1991 as a venture of Software Etc., and the wordmark borrowed that parent company's modified Handel Gothic type style. The chain passed through two ownership changes during this period, becoming part of NeoStar Retail Group after Babbage's absorbed Software Etc. in 1994.
1999–2000
Rainbow mark
After Barnes and Noble acquired Babbage's Etc. in 1999, GameStop received a multicolor wordmark set in a modified OCR-A typeface. The acquisition also enabled rapid geographic expansion beyond the north Midwest, with Barnes and Noble separately purchasing Funco, Inc. (parent of FuncoLand) the following year.

On August 15, 2000, the chain adopted a bold Impact-set wordmark splitting "Game" in black and "Stop" in red, a pairing that would define the brand's visual identity for over two decades. The logo remained on most US storefronts even after GameStop Corp. was spun off from Barnes and Noble in 2004 and absorbed EB Games in 2005.
2012–2021
Impact refined
A December 2012 revision adjusted the red shade on "Stop", added modest letter-spacing, and extended the descender on the lowercase "p". The changes were subtle enough that most customers would not register a rebrand, while designers at the company gained slightly more breathing room in the type.

Simon Walker refinement
Designed by Simon Walker for McGarrah Jessee
Type designer Simon Walker, working with agency McGarrah Jessee, cleaned up and modernized the Impact letterforms for the first Canadian GameStop location on July 28, 2021, with US rollout following on September 6, 2021. The revision softened sharp edges and tightened overall geometry while preserving the black-and-red split that had anchored the brand since 2000.
