1972–1973
Home Box Office wordmark
HBO launched November 8, 1972, as a regional pay television service in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The full-name wordmark reflected the channel's early identity before it abbreviated to a three-letter mark.
1973–1975
Ticket stub marquee
A still image pairing a ticket stub with the full name "Home Box Office" framed by a minimalist marquee-light border identified the channel during this period. The design emphasized the theatrical, event-driven nature of the programming before the network settled on a compact lettermark.
1975–1980
Overlapping-B wordmark
Introduced May 1, 1975, this wordmark used bold uppercase letters with a solid circle inside the "O" representing a camera lens, and the "O" overlapping the "B". Network identifiers often paired it with horizontal bars in red, yellow, and blue. HBO became the first television network to transmit via satellite on September 30, 1975, using this mark.

Gerard Huerta wordmark
Designed by Gerard Huerta
Typographer Gerard Huerta refined the letterforms in April 1980, separating the "O" from the "B" to eliminate the visual ambiguity that made the "B" read as an "E". The letters were trimmed slightly less bold, and spacing around the circle in the "O" was widened, producing the tightly balanced proportions the network has used ever since.
