1943–1944
Founding mark
Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA as a mail-order business in 1943 at seventeen years old, and the earliest mark appeared on catalog correspondence. The hand-lettered wordmark was functional rather than designed, one of several rotating treatments used during the company's early years selling small goods by post.
1952–1957
Lundgren diagonal
Designed by Gillis Lundgren
Gillis Lundgren, then head of advertising, reworked the earlier Sandström sketch into all-capital letters positioned on a diagonal axis. The shift to upper case was tied to IKEA's move into hardwood furniture: the new configuration read as a quality signal, not just a name.
