1956–1970
Founding wordmark
The chain's earliest logotype rendered the name with a possessive apostrophe and bold, slightly tilted letterforms suited to black-and-white newspaper advertising. Color printing was uncommon in discount retail at the time, so the mark relied on contrast and weight rather than hue.
1974–1989
1974 wordmark
A May 1974 redesign dropped the possessive apostrophe and introduced a custom sans-serif wordmark with distinctive inline stripes running through each letterform. The stripes gave the letters a dimensional, illuminated quality that became the chain's visual signature through the late 1980s.
1989–2002
Optima era
Introduced in August 1989, this version shifted to a modified Optima typeface with thinner letterforms and a dark turquoise color. A red horizontal rule beneath the wordmark added a second accent color, and the internal white stripes were simplified to short glare-like accents rather than full-character lines.
2002–present · current
Current mark
Around 2002 and finalized by 2004, the red underline was removed and the wordmark's texture was eliminated, producing a flat, single-color mark. The change aligned Marshalls' visual identity more closely with TJX Companies' broader portfolio and improved legibility across signage and digital applications.
