1889–1936
Founding mark
The earliest Michelin identity drew from the company's incorporation documents, presenting the name in a text-based format without a mascot. When cartoonist Marius Rosillon (known as O'Galop) created Bibendum in 1898, the figure appeared primarily in advertising posters rather than as a formal logo.

Designed by O'Galop (Marius Rosillon)
Bibendum's tire-stacking silhouette, which O'Galop had first drawn in 1898 from an earlier rejected brewery illustration, was formalized as the corporate symbol in 1936. The figure remained white to reflect the pale rubber of pre-carbon tires, a color convention that outlasted the technology that inspired it.

Antique Olive Nord
A new wordmark set in Antique Olive Nord, Roger Excoffon's ultra-bold typeface released by Fonderie Olive between 1962 and 1966, replaced the previous letterforms and gave the brand a heavier, more mechanical appearance suited to an industrial tire company. Bibendum received a major redraw in 1984 to accompany the updated system.
1997–2017
Michelin Black
Introduced in late 1997 to mark Bibendum's centennial and coincide with Michelin's sponsorship of the 1998 FIFA World Cup, this identity replaced Antique Olive Nord with Michelin Black, a bespoke oblique typeface developed in-house. The wordmark appeared in white on a blue rectangle, underlined by a yellow rule, with a saluting Bibendum placed to the left.

Bibendum above
The 2017 refresh retired the blue rectangle and repositioned Bibendum above the wordmark rather than beside it, establishing a clearer vertical hierarchy. The yellow rule moved above the logotype, and the mascot was redrawn with a simplified, friendlier form suited to digital applications.
