1965–1974
Upco
The company launched under the name UPCO, short for United Pharmacal Company, operating as a mail-order pet supply business out of San Diego. The wordmark used plain block lettering with no figurative elements, reflecting the utilitarian catalog-retail origins of the brand.

1974–1979
Upco revised
A revised Upco mark updated the letterforms while retaining the all-caps typographic approach. The company was still primarily a mail-order operation during this period, with retail stores beginning to expand across the western United States.

1979–1989
Petco wordmark
The brand adopted the Petco name in 1979, replacing the Upco identity as retail store count grew. The new logotype used a condensed sans-serif style with a distinctive color treatment, signaling the shift from catalog to brick-and-mortar retail.

Ruff and Mews
This iteration introduced the cat and dog mascot pair named Red Ruff and Blue Mews alongside a Frankfurter/American Typewriter Bold typographic pairing. The mascots became central to Petco's store signage and advertising through the 1990s and 2000s.

Lippincott refresh
Designed by Lippincott
Branding firm Lippincott redesigned the mark in August 2011, replacing the legacy typeface with a modified Museo Sans and simplifying the overall composition. Red Ruff and Blue Mews were retained but rendered in a cleaner, more contemporary style.

Current mark
The October 2020 redesign removed the cat and dog mascots from the primary logo after nearly three decades, replacing them with a simplified wordmark set in a modified LL Circular typeface. Ruff and Mews continue to appear in marketing materials but are no longer part of the core brand mark.
