Red Hat Software wordmark
The company's earliest logo placed a simple top hat above the name "Red Hat Software" in a modified Nimbus Roman No.9 L serif. Founded in 1995 by Bob Young and Marc Ewing, the brand used this typeset mark in its initial product packaging and catalog materials.

Running man era
A silhouetted figure in a red fedora, carrying a briefcase and mid-stride, replaced the wordmark and gave the brand its first character-driven identity. The typeface shifted to American Typewriter, lending the mark a mechanical, print-shop character suited to the company's early open-source positioning.

The cleaner rendering held through Red Hat's IPO, its growth into an enterprise software company, and the lead-up to IBM's $34 billion acquisition in 2019.

Designed by Pentagram (Paula Scher)
Working with Paula Scher at Pentagram and Red Hat's in-house team, the company replaced Shadowman with a simplified hat drawn at the same angle as its predecessor but stripped of all figurative detail. The custom Red Hat Display typeface accompanied the new mark, and the redesign was developed through an unusually public process that included community surveys and staff workshops.
