1954–1960
Launch wordmark
Sports Illustrated debuted in August 1954 with a serif logotype characteristic of mid-century American magazine mastheads. The stacked lettering reflected the editorial conventions of Time Inc., which launched the title.

1960–1966
Condensed serif
A condensed serif treatment replaced the earlier masthead around 1960, tightening the letterforms and giving the cover more room for photography. The shift aligned with broader trends in magazine typography during the Kennedy era.

1966–1987
Block serif era
The 1966 masthead introduced a bolder, more upright block serif that would remain on the cover for over two decades. Its durability across changing editorial regimes reflected how strongly readers associated the letterforms with the magazine.
1987–2001
Italic wordmark
A redesign in 1987 introduced an italic, slightly condensed sans-serif wordmark that leaned forward and conveyed a sense of motion more suited to sports coverage. The new mark accompanied a broader update to the magazine's editorial design.
2001–2024
Refined sans-serif
The 2001 iteration refined the italic wordmark with tighter tracking and cleaner terminals, adapting the identity for digital contexts as the brand expanded its web presence. This version remained in continuous use for over two decades.
2024–present · current
Current mark
Following Arena Group's acquisition and significant editorial restructuring, Sports Illustrated introduced a redrawn wordmark in 2024. The update brought a more geometric sans-serif form, separating the identity visually from the long-running italic tradition.
